Gifts for the Writers in Your Life

Trying to think of a great gift to make for the writer in your life?  In college a friend gave me a Writer’s First Aid Kit, which included an empty journal, a pound of coffee, a quill with ink, an oxygen mask (for close deadlines), and a hand brace for my carpal tunnel syndrome.  It was one of my favorite gifts.

As a Writers in the Schools (WITS) teacher, I’ve received many wonderful writerly gifts from children.   The best ones are always homemade, such as the 7th grader’s “poetry calendar” which featured 12 of her own poems, a 1st grader’s “peppermint pencils” decorated with red and green pipe cleaners, and a 4th grader’s bag of “writing rocks” with words painted on them.

For more inspiration, visit Jennifer Tatroe’s blog.  She’s a collage artist and Pushcart-nominated short fiction author with some fun ideas for the authors and writing teachers you love best.

If you don’t have time to make your gifts, there’s still hope.  You can visit Tatroe’s Palimpsestic, her shop on Etsy where she is selling  her Pride and Prejudice Vintage Book Flower Garland, her Comedy/Tragedy Writer Dice, which she bills as a “Shakespearean Stocking Stuffer,”  and much more.  Now, go and shower some love on the writers in your life!

  1. Oh, how awesome are you? Thanks for featuring my Writer Dice. As the mom of a 5th-grader, I am so supportive of what you’re doing and am eternally grateful for anything that gets kids excited about writing and the literary life.
